When television first was introduced to American homes back in 1940, it was an experience worth sharing with everyone you lived with or near. Now with high definition streaming and mobile devices capable of accessing just about anything through the clouds, television hasn’t had the same connecting spirit as it once had. Bigscreen TV is looking to make a modern makeover to an old times habit.

Bigscreen is an app inside of virtual reality that allows you to access your desktop screen inside of your headset. This app has plenty of great reviews and it is easy for all people with all sorts of technological backgrounds to use. The app developers and creators have taken a different route with Bigscreen TV and have turned it into a free streaming service for you and your virtual buddies. This streaming service will allow you to stream over 50 channels of your favorite shows into your own virtual reality headset. This does not mean that the shows will be in virtual reality, but your surroundings will be.

“With Bigscreen, users can watch a Netflix show or a Twitch stream in an IMAX-like virtual movie theater.” Bigscreen reported that, and it shows some promise in the virtual social worlds.  This offers not only shows, but offers your day-to-day streaming services right inside of your headset.

You can create virtual hangouts with up to 8 different people, and they can be friends and strangers alike. This creates opportunities to grow your friendships or develop new ones all through a virtual reality headset. This is something many have been waiting for. There are other streaming services available and other television apps in VR available, but there is nothing like Bigscreen TV that mixes them all together for you, while including 7 of your friends.

  • Movies & TV: Rifftrax, MST3K, Anime, Pokémon, Pluto Movies, Comet, Shout! Factory, and more
  • News & Finance: NBC, CNN, Bloomberg, Sky News, Newsy, Cheddar News, RT America, Weather Nation, Crypto News, and more
  • Gaming & Sports: Red Bull TV, 24/7 Poker, 24/7 Trivia, CBS Sports, FOX Sports, Top Twitch (Ninja, Shroud, Sodapoppin, Timthetatman, Lirik, DrDisrespect, DrLupo, Pokimane, Summit1g), and more
  • Random: Monstercat, Lofi Hip Hop Beats Radio, Comedy Central, NASA, SpaceX, 24/7 Cats, and more

Going through the menus in this app have been made even more simple and real than ever before. While on your smart TV you know how convenient and reliant the systems are, and Bigscreen wanted to replicate that inside of virtual reality. “We built a new VR video browser technology that can load video streaming and live streaming sites. Bigscreen TV enables VR users to access the content they can already access via a web browser, but with a user experience that’s like an Apple TV,” Bigscreen said in a report.

Included with this already great app in cinematic mode. This is something along the lines of the PSVR cinematic mode, but it has its own flair to it. You will be able to watch only certain live events, movies, and some television shows.

The beta app is available today through any major VR headset. Not only will this beta be inside of all PC VR headsets, but any standalone headset will feature this as well. You can visit the Oculus Store or on SteamVR for free.
