Unearthing Mars 2 is a first-person shooter that is going to take you on a true mental trip before the game has run its course. This game will take you from your home Earth, to Mars, and all the way back to earth before the day is over. You are going to be playing as a scientist from way back when, and the game is in a memory of sorts, and you will feel like you are re-writing history. This game is simply out of this world.

This game isn’t a cartoon title like many that you see inside of virtual reality, and it is clear that the developers were aiming to make this game as real as possible. From the graphics to the interactions with virtual humans, the game does a pretty decent job of convincing you that you really are a scientist, but you simply never forget that you are wearing a headset throughout your experience with Unearthing Mars 2.

Getting Up and Running

For the file size of this game, you are going to be downloading a file of over 7 GB. If you have some slower internet speeds, you might want to grab a snack and turn on your favorite show, and download time could run over an hour. If you are connected with some internet that makes you wonder if you are from the future with its speed, then you can expect this game to download in about 10 minutes. Still enough time for some snacks, but maybe don’t start a new episode of Breaking Bad just yet.

This game is no different than any other virtual game you are going to download. If you get the game from Steam, you will need to choose where the file is stored locally, which can often be a pain. If you can get this game through Viveport, then this game is going to be downloaded on the app itself and you can start the game and virtual reality right there from inside of the app. Viveport is probably the way to go with this one, especially because it is a part of the Viveport Infinity subscription.

Type of Game

Unearthing Mars 2 is a first-person shooter with a bit of a twist. You can find yourself a part of a mystery throughout this game, and you can also find yourself exploring more than shooting as well. Before you even can get going in this game, there is a lot of ground to cover before you find yourself shooting your future weapons.

When you finally land on earth after the opening cutscene, that is when the tutorial begins and you start to learn to interact with this world. Here is where you will exploring and learning what kind of this game is. it is hard to put it in one category, and that would be unfair to the developers to box their game up like that. When you play this game, go to the comments and let us know what you think this game should be categorized as!

Player Perspective

This game is in the first-person perspective, and it is one of the better games inside of this category. You will be able to not only see your hands like any other VR game, but you are going to see your neck, body, legs, and even arms. This is an all-inclusive VR game in this perspective and they make sure to let you feel it. Any other perspective for this thriller would have been a bad choice.

Theme and Story – Score: 8/10

In this sci-fi game, both the theme and story were very strong. The theme is space and planet exploration, and it is prominent throughout the game. As for the story, it felt like a choose your own adventure at times, which made it more authentic than most. A high score for this part of the game, but the trend won’t continue when it comes to the controls.

Controls – Score: 3/10

The controls in this game, we were a bit disappointed. The game says it is optimized for the Valve controllers, but it clearly isn’t. If we were playing this game with different controllers, we might have had a different experince, but we didn’t. The Valve controllers and the lack of good inputs made this game nearly unplayable at times. Your game is only as good as the input options, so this will be receiving a pretty low score here.

Music and Sound – Score: 7/10

Both the music and sound in this game matched the gameplay perfectly. The sounds that non-astronauts would expect to hear in space and on other planets was expertly done and exactly what you would think. The spatial audio in this game was also fantastic, making the headphones perfectly used in this area. A little more upbeat rhythms and this game would have been primed for an even higher score than it received.

Player Movement – Score: 6/10

Traditional Player movement was used in this game, but it would’ve been really nice to see something else used here. It gets the job done, but there is so much more that could’ve been done with a game that was made somewhat recently. If you are a fan of the teleportation mechanism in most VR games, this one won’t be for you.

Kinetosis – Score: 8/10

Because this game incorporates the regular locomotion you found in earlier games so well, you won’t be getting motion sick unless you force it upon yourself. A high score here, and it could’ve been perfect if the cutscenes in the story didn’t throw you around as much as they did. A near perfect experience that cause nearly no motion sickness.

Environment and Immersion – Score: 6/10

This game does a good job at keeping you in the game, but the narrator often breaks the immersion of what you are doing in the game, but not the virtual immersion of it. He is constantly reminding you that you are simply experiencing something that already happened, which can leave you scratching your head at time.

Overall – Score: 6.3/10

This game did a lot of things that were right, but it also failed in multiple departments. If you are going to create a game, you need to use the best tech available to you. We do highly suggest this game to others with the right controllers, so make sure you aren’t using the Valve controllers for your gaming and we will try it out with our other headsets as well. The control section took the score down a bit, but this is still a great game.
