Osso VR is a company that is dedicated to training the medical field through virtual reality. The company is a surgical training and assessment platform that is designed for surgeons, sales teams to demonstrate their products, and all hospital staff to freshen their skills and practices. Although this is not a perfect way for doctors to learn about the right practices of surgery, this is certainly a step in the right direction for anyone that is looking to mix virtual reality with something that can truly help and heal people.

Dr. Justin Barad was the initial creator of this amazing and helpful platform and if you visit the the Osso VR website you can see the his mission statement and how this company came about. It goes on to say “With a background in gaming, Dr. Justin Barad’s interest in the medical industry began when a family member faced a tough diagnoses. It was during his medical training, that Dr. Barad realized that surgical training and assessment has not evolved as quickly as the devices themselves – and has remained largely the same for the last 100 years. This was an astounding revelation, especially considering advancements in technical training among other industries. Justin decided he wanted to be a part of the solution to a very real, well defined problem. With a background in software development, he built out the first prototype of what is now the leading virtual reality solution used for training and assessing today’s surgeons, sales teams, and hospital staff.”

This is truly remarkable that he went this route and was successful, something no one else has ever done. It notes that Justin knows that the training hasn’t been upgraded in almost 100 years, and he is completely right when he says it is time for an upgrade. Even swimming training has been upgraded with the help of technology. VR as we know it today won’t be the solution to training hospital staffs, but down the road when hand and finger tracking are involved and the immseriveness of VR is upgraded, this will truly be something that doctors can learn from. Right now this is what the training looks like.

The company has come out to say recently that over 1,000 surgeons are using this platform monthly for their medical training or practicing. This is pretty incredible considering that being a surgeon isn’t a common job. The medical industry has been progressing a great amount in the past years, but the training hasn’t. This is a great step in the right direction.

“This technology can drastically change the lives of our patients, and it is critical that we maximize access to the platform. Our continued expansion is a marker of the global nature of these training gaps and the scalability of Osso’s technology. Patients today want the most valuable treatment, which often involves new and innovative medical technologies. Surgeons badly want to deliver for their patient, but might lack the tools that allow them to utilize these novel techniques. Osso VR augments the surgical team, giving them the proficiency and objective confidence that they can bring significant value to their patients using the highest value devices.” said Justin Barad, MD, CEO and co-founder of Osso VR.

The main focus is to clearly help surgeons get hands-on training wherever they may be. Practicing inside of VR allows you to be more hands-on and risk free than ever before. It also allows you to be more selfish and self-focused in your own skill development. Without a desire to be better for yourself, it is going to be hard to be considered a great surgeon. Repetition and time is the only way to become better.
