According to reports made from The Information, Facebook and Oculus are going to be signing more gaming studio deals in the near future. Their latest is Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell and the Ubisoft hit Assassin’s Creed. This only adds to Oculus’s collection of high-profile gaming studios making them exclusive games down the road.
The Information is closely reporting on this story, as it reports that “two people familiar with the matter” are saying that Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook CEO and creator) is directly working on these deals himself. Jason Rubin who is the head of content over at Oculus is also working on these deals with Mark as they try to make a heist of the largest and best gaming studios for their upcoming gaming headsets.
The report goes on to finish saying that deals to make exclusive games for Oculus have already been signed to make Assassins Creed and Splinter Cell. There is no word on what the length or gameplay will be like inside of the headsets, but we can assume that these will be some of Oculus’s best titles up to date. The games are being called “VR Versions” rather than “VR Experiences” and that itself is promising. Even in games that we thought were great already, they were called experiences. Having these larger titles be a VR version is exciting for any fan of virtual reality.
Ubisoft already has a plethora of VR games hitting the virtual shelves, and Assassins Creed will only add to their riches. With games like Star Trek: Bridge Crew, Space Junkies, Werewolves Within, and Eagle Flight, we know they know how to make games for VR and know what us gamers will be expecting. These are some of the best games on the market right now, and making more Oculus exclusives is a big investment.
This exact investment with these two companies seem to be less than 1 billion dollars, but overall cost may seem to raise that number. Oculus responded to the story by saying that the company “cannot comment on specific partnerships, but we will continue to focus on expanding our library and reaching broader gaming audiences for years to come.” One thing is for sure about Oculus right now is the they are actively pursuing a team of developers and gaming studios that is unrivaled by anyone else. If this keeps up, even the PSVR powerhouse will be unable to match the ever-growing Oculus exclusive titles.
While Oculus exclusives have been completely original for the most part with games like Vader Immortal, Lone Echo, Robo Recall and others, this new route seems to be something different. For VR junkies we are more than happy for Oculus to produce original gaming content. As time progresses and more people are introduced to Oculus, many will start asking why they can’t play their favorite titles inside of VR. The latest moves will be targeting that audience. This will make popular and great console games a VR favorite as well. This is something Oculus has clearly been working on for years, and the public is finally seeing the work come to light.
We are very excited by these moves by one of the biggest virtual reality companies. This shows promise and a clear initiative. They has been no hesitation is getting the studios they want and paying them to make exclusive games for their up and coming headsets. We know Oculus has something up their sleeves for this coming fall and we are excited to see how these studios are going to play a part in the release. Until then, this news is more than enough to hold us over.
