Will Death Stranding Ever Come To VR?

Sam Porter Bridges isn’t the most simple man in the world, but he might be the most vital. In Death Stranding from Kojima Productions, you will be playing as Sam as his goal is to reconnect the “United Cities of America”, after the Death Stranding that took place. The Death Stranding caused “BT’s”, an invisible creature that is dead-set on dragging you to the depths of hell.

BT’s will be causing “voidouts”, which are explosions that cause a rainfall that will cause rapid aging and deterioration to anything and everything it touches. Sam, the character you will be the entire time you play Death Stranding, is tasked with connecting the United Cities of America by both his mother and the President of the UCA, Bridget. There is a lot to learn and uncover in this story, and the main story could take anyone up to 50 hours of gameplay to finish. This is one of the largest PlayStation exclusive titles on the market right now.

In Death Stranding, you are essentially a large-scale high priority delivery guy. Sam is going to be getting deliveries tasked to him constantly, and the distances you have to travel are far and wide. Even when you fail the same mission repeatedly, there seems to be no shortage of environments and landscapes to impress you.

Most of this game is delivery, or managing the deliveries that are given to you. Do you do them one by one with the risk of being attacked? Or should you trust your robot that is susceptible to being hacked? Or should you pack plenty on your back with the risk of falling on your mountain and dying? Part of this game is strategy, and the other part feels like a complex scenario of trying to get all of your groceries into your house at once.

There is something to love about foraging your own paths in the wild and being left alone to take care of your missions, but this kind of gameplay isn’t for everyone. There is the occasional boss you have to take care of, and the inconsistent enemy you need to shoot, but most of this game is exploration and finding the right way to deliver the deliverables.

As for virtual reality, this game is still up in the air. We know that a PC version is looming, but we aren’t sure if that is going to bring the connectivity with the PC VR headsets with it. PS VR headsets are usually getting support with the biggest games on the PlayStation, but we haven’t heard much about it yet. This is something we don’t usually see until the game is more accepted by the community, but PS VR is something that is gaining popularity and will require some more attention going forward.

One of the troubles with getting this game onto both the PlayStation headsets and PC headsets is how the game was made. Much like Fortnite, the demand for the game on VR headsets isn’t going to change when the game comes. To make these types of games playable on the virtual reality headsets, they essentially need to be built from the ground up.

We aren’t sure if the development team is going to take the time to do that right now, especially with the popularity that virtual reality is still lacking. It will be interesting to see what they do going forward, but right now, Death Stranding VR is in limbo. For more VR games and community updates, make sure to check back at VRGear.com
