The Oculus Quest has been regarded as the best VR headset up to date. The Quest is completely standalone, has phenomenal graphics, great processing power, and very easy to use for everyone. This headset removes all needs for an external sensors, meaning you can take this headset anywhere and play.
Once you are at the space you wish to play in, toss the headset and draw your guardians. It’s that simple. For even a more immersive experience, you can put the Quest in developer mode and take the guardian setting completely off. This can make VR very immersive and scary and fun all at the same time. Freely roaming inside of a virtual space can be eerie, but overall something that many people would love to try.
The intended purpose of the tracking of the Quest is to be either Room Scale or Stationary, but what about Home Scaled? This is the question that Reality Rebels poses to everyone with a Quest. Why don’t we turn your every day living space into a true virtual space that can be used fully? VRScout teamed up with Reality Rebels to showcase and ask about it, and below we are going to outline and show what this upcoming studio of gamers had to say about the idea.
Reality Rebels is a small group. It is made of one developer and four play testers. They have documented all of their experiences and their progression on their YouTube channel if that is something you are interested in.
This is something that all Oculus Quest users should be interested in. If you have some free space that you can clear, you could make room for a virtual elevator, different levels inside of your home and office, and even customizable levels. In addition to all of that, the company says that each level will be made is perfectly in-line with your house to ensure that you’re not running into your kitchen counter.
When VRScout asked what kind of games the studio is considering making with this technology, they said “We are considering many ideas. They range from individual experiences to a metaverse platform that would act as a hub for these experiences. However, it’s too early to announce anything as we’re still focused on building the core technology that makes everything work.” It is clearly in the future, but they are not going to take any shortcuts in making this technology perfect.
When asked what they have been challenged with most for their time as a mini studio, Reality Rebels responded saying “Other companies have posted prototypes online showing players walking around levels mapped to their space, but those prototypes only work in those specific spaces. You could not play them in your own home.
We wanted to create an experience that adapts to the unique layout of any space. This is difficult from both a technical and artistic perspective. We don’t know what your space looks like. Our system has to figure out how to put together a level that both fits your unique space and fits the theme of the game. We are also experimenting with ways to reuse your space. For example, you can enter an elevator which will seamlessly bring you to a new level based on the same layout.”
If you are unable to walk into a completely different room because you lack the physical space, you are going to be able to use the virtual elevator. This is a revolutionary idea from the startup company and something that will remain inside of their software and their games for the years to come.
