Facebook’s Oculus applied for a patent on a electromagnetic cable connector for all if its PC VR headsets. It is very similar to the ‘MagSafe’ charger that the Apple MacBooks used just until recently.
With current wired VR headsets, if you go too far from the computer or whatever the connector is, it will violently rip the headset off or even the monitor off of the desk. This has caused many accidents and in some cases minor injuries.
With this patent in place, it will have the chance to make a connector that would just simply unplug itself with too much tension or pulling. The Oculus Rift will most likely be the first to feature this with it being standard.
While wireless options are available, they are a bit pricey and usually require all mounting. The cable as they stand right now are a huge obstacle for PC VR owners and users.
