ZR Zombie Riot is a game that has you pitted against an army of zombies. In this first-person experience you are going to be tricking and shooting these zombies for eternity, as they are even going to be falling for your bait. This isn’t a creepy game that is going to leave you scared to turn off your lights, but the gun action mixed with the fun and realistic shooting engines make this game a near must-play.
This is a cartoon take on what could have been a terrifying title. You aren’t going to be fighting anything that is too heavily resembling a human, but you will be shooting a cartoon zombie, something many have seen for years and years inside of first-person games on consoles. Tomb ie games and shooing zombies has been a staple for some time, and with it officially being spooky season, you can expect this game to be one of the top played in the month of October.
Getting Up and Running
This game doesn’t pack a punch with the download size, as it is only 5 GB, but it is enough to make you wait around for a little bit of time if you aren’t downloading at insane internet speeds. This game is going to be located inside of the Steam Store as well as the Viveport store, and as of the end of October, it is a part of the highly-rated Viveport Infinity subscription. Installing ZR Zombie Riot is no different than any other virtual reality game out there.
If you download it from the Viveport store, you are going to be able to launch the game right from that app inside of VR. If you get it through steam, you are going to have to choose where you store the file locally. Because this game isn’t too large in file size, it shouldn’t make too much of a difference of where you store it on your PC. Loading into the game is just as easy as any other virtual game as well.
Type of Game
There is no way around the fact that this game is a first-person shooter. Mix it in with the fact that you are going to be killing zombies and tricking them throughout your stay in this game, you could say there is a bit of strategy as well. You hav multiple options of how you play this killing game as well.
You can pick between endless zombie mode and story mode. For the purpose of the review, we went with story mode to understand more of what this game had to offer. After we were finished with story mode, we did dabble in the endless mode and found that to be very fun and reminiscent of the Call of Duty Zombie days. This game was far from perfect, but is going to captivate the attention of many.
Player Perspective
This is a first-person shooter, and there are no other ways to play this game. It also helps that this game is played as a standing or sitting experience only, and doesn’t offer the option for room scale. The zombies will be flying at you throughout the entire game and wont be forcing you to chase them throughout the house and park that you find yourself often exploring. This is an incredible idea from the developers, and they clearly didn’t try to do too much here.
Theme and Story – Score: 7/10
Like most VR games, you are going to have a guide throughout your gameplay. In this game, you are “learning” to fight off zombies, even though it seem like it is pretty simple, and it is. you are going to faced with different ways and scenarios to kill, and it is surprisingly engaging enough to leave us wanting more after we already played an hour in this game. It doesn’t have a clear directly, but it is clearly fun to play longer than 15 minutes.
Controls – Score: 7/10
The controls of this game are very intuitive and fun to use, but they often would fail you in the heat of battle. This doesn’t mean they are permanently broke, but they could be in for a nice update in the coming months. You didn’t have to get around much in this game, so there were no reasons to get too motion sick from the controls either. The trigger is going to be heavily used in this game, but not much else will see too much action.
Music and Sound – Score: 7/10
The music and sound effects were top notch in this game. The only knock on this game in this department is the lack of spatial audio incorporated. Even on the powerful and great Valve Index, it is hard to know where the zombies are exactly coming from. This is especially important because the game doesn’t encourage you to be turning around, so knowing where they are coming from is just as important as having bullets loaded into your gun.
Player Movement – Score: 7/10
There is not much movement in this game, and when you do need to move, there is only small movements and pivots in the game. If you are subject to motion sickness, this game is perfect for you. Unless you whipping your head around as quickly as possible, you are going to feel like the headset is just an extension of your head as well. There is a lot to do in this game, and you don’t have to move for almost any of it.
Kinetosis – Score: 9/10
Because of the movement being so compact and easy in this game, you aren’t going to experience much motion sickness at all. Like we said earlier, if you have your VR legs under you, you will be experiencing a relieving amount of regularity inside of the headset. A feeling that is elusive while playing a plethora of different virtual reality games.
Environment and Immersion – Score: 9/10
This game is at the top of
Overall – Score: 7.8/10
ZR Zombie Riot is one of the better games on the market right now. Its not too graphic, but it can still entertain any adult. It has great engines for shooting, but it doesn’t overcomplicate the process, and it has stunningly fun gameplay and stories inside of the game. This is easily one of our favorite games in our quest for 100 in 100, and it is a game we are going to be spending some free time in.
