Overkill Vr might be one of the most overlooked first-person shooting games in virtual reality. This game gets little to no attention, as it was made two years ago, but it provides one of the best war games on any virtual reality headset up to date. Whether it be the intriguing story line or the realistic shooting mechanics, there isn’t anything about this game not to love. This is one of the better games inside of virtual reality, regardless of the genre.

This game puts you through countless maps and war scenarios. To beat them, you must master your weapons and your aim, as the enemy won’t back down easily. You are a part of the Resistance and your job is to inspire thousands to eventually join your side in fighting. Will you be able to rally the troops and encourage the outnumbered fighters of the resistance to fight along your side? Jump into our review and find out why this is one of the hidden VR gems.

Getting Up and Running

For being one of the most customizable games inside of VR, and with a real story and map, it is impressive to see the file size come it at 1.2 GB. If you have a fast internet connection, this could come onto your computer within just a few minutes. If you are dealing with internet that isn’t as fast as others, your download time could range upward of an hour. Choosing your local file to save this game into won’t be too large of a problem, as the file size isn’t going to be the biggest game for the VR headset you have.

This game can be found on the Steam Store for $19.99, or the Viveport store for the same price. If you have the Viveport Infinity, this game is going to be included in the free games you can download. If you choose to pay the full price for this game, it will be saved in a local file. If you download this game inside of Viveport, it is going to be much easier to find as it will be located and stored right inside of the app.

Type of Game

Overkill VR is a war and shooting game, and there’s not another valid way to categorize it. This game will throw you on a map as you are collecting coins and wiping the enemies out. If you are looking for a war game that is as customizable as Tom Clancy games, this is the one. Not only will you be able to customize your character in this game, but you will be able to customize your guns and load out completely as well. It is rare to see this kind of customization inside of any game, and to see it in VR is a breath of fresh air.

This game isn’t a regular point and shoot either. It forces you to take time on your shots. If you thought this game would be as easy and calm as Robo Recall, think again. You will be ducking down below the rocks and behind walls while you are trying to look down the scope and hit the sniper that has been pestering you all level. This game requires more dedication and time to be good at than most VR games.

Player Perspective

This game is in first person, but it is much more immersive than most games. Instead of just showing your hands or a little bit of your forearms, this game is going to show your whole body as you are in the battle field and just standing in front of your briefs. This is a part of the game that doesn’t go unnoticed, as not many virtual games can include this while maintaining a full story, crisp graphics, and a good locomotion system.

Theme and Story – Score: 8/10

This is a game that is going to rely heavily on the story to keep you coming back to the game. If this game was just the shooting by itself, it wouldn’t be anything too spectacular. Because it is a full story with countless missions and map data, you will be fully invested in the future. As a part of the Resistance, you will be a pillar of light to those facing challenges placed on them by the evil, and you need to search and destroy the bad. This isn’t going to be easy, that is why there is so much story to be played.

Controls – Score: 7/10

This game was very intelligent in the way they used all of the input options on the controller. Unlike most games in VR, this game used the grip quite a lot. To reload your weapon, you need to press the grip and put the clip in with your opposite hand. To switch weapons, you press any of the buttons on the left controller. There are plenty of different inputs in this game and it makes the game as immersive as ever. It isn’t perfect, but for a game that was made two years ago, we don’t expect anything much past what it is.

Music and Sound – Score: 6/10

There is only a little of background music in this game, but it only adds to the immersion that you are experiencing. This means that you won’t be able to hear it unless you focus on it, but even then, it is hard to point out. Most of the sound is coming from the enemies, their weapons, and your guns. Their sounds make it easier to know exactly where they are coming from, and where you can expect them next. It also warns you if you are about to see a tank or a helicopter come your way.

Player Movement Score: 5/10

The only way to move significant amounts in this game is by clearing a wave and choosing which spot to fight from next. The yellow options are easier, and the red are harder. Red does get you more points at the end of the level, but it unlikely to beat that level early in the game. This game is best played at roomscale so you can jump from side to side. This won’t move you too much, but it does get you around.

Kinetosis – Score: 6/10

This game does a fantastic job o representing what you are feeling in the real world with what you are seeing in the game. Ducking behind walls and rocks too fast can make the game play catch-up for a second or two, but it will leave you feeling fine after a few minutes. This game cares about how you feel, but not to a point where it completely forgets to let you move inside of VR.

Environment and Immersion – Score: 8/10

Overkill VR has so much going on inside of it, you don’t have time to think about how you are actually wearing a headset. With constant motion in the game and enemies firing at you, there is not enough time in this game to think about what you are doing in the real world, just enough time to think about reloading your weapon and getting back to the combat that you love. The sounds and picture are fantastic, and there is enough good physics in this game to keep you coming back to this virtual world.

Overall – Score: 6.6/10

This game is a fantastic buy for only $20. With a story mode that will take multiple hours to finish and a level of customization that is unparalleled, this game is meant for long gameplay. If you have the Viveport Infinity subscription, you need to download this game as soon as possible. If you don’t have Viveport Infinity, it is worth spending $20 on the best first-person shooting game in VR that puts you in a war setting.
