Escape Room VR capitalizes on a fantastic idea inside of virtual reality. Escape rooms are gaining popularity each and every year, and bringing them to virtual reality was only a matter of time. This game was made back in the middle of 2018, but it is only getting more popular with time. Just one hour inside of a real escape room can be upward of $30. This game is only $10 and performs with the ability of a $40 game inside of the virtual world.

This game presents you with different rooms to escape. Throughout the game, you will only have 3 different rooms, but it is more than enough to get through. Just getting the first hint is hard enough, so it is incredibly important to listen to the voice prompting very closely. If you don’t speak or understand english, this game is going to take a while to get through. In all, it will take about four or five hours to finish all of the gameplay it has to offer.

Getting Up and Running

This game is larger title, coming in at 5 GB. It could be as fast as a 10 minute download time, or north of an hour, just depending on your internet speeds. If you get this game through Steam for the full $10, you will have to choose where you store this game in your local files, which can be tough because of the file size. If you opt to get this game through Viveport or Oculus, this game will be much easy to gain access to. It will be stored inside the app on your PC and you can launch VR from there.

Getting started in this game is as easy as any else. Event though you need to interact with plenty of objects in this virtual escape room. Some games don’t have a clear tutorial and control instructions, but this game does. Just a couple minutes into the game and you will feel ready to conquer the dungeons you have been placed in.

Type of Game

This is a classic escape room game, with a lot of adventure and mystery included in it. It isn’t until you finally escape your first room is when you learn who was guiding you through all of your clues. Everything in this game is going go be manually done, so calling it a simulation like many have would be disrespectful to the developers who put time into the interactions in VR.

If you are wanting to spend a large amount of time inside of virtual reality while trying to solve crimes and puzzles without getting too distracted, this is the game for you. If you are trying to find a game that is throwing new themes and distractions all throughout your gameplay, this isn’t the one. This is a methodical game that requires plenty of focus to get past the levels. Without it, you will find yourself in the same spot in an hour.

Player Perspective

This game is going to be in first person. It isn’t optimized for the Valve index controllers yet, but they work just fine with this game. Your fingers don’t individually move on their own yet, but that is an update that we are hoping to see in the near future. There is no legs, arms, or even head in this game, but it goes unnoticed for the most part as this game does an incredible job immersing you in this crime-filled world. Everything else in this game makes up for the fact that you are really just a floating set of hands.

Theme and Story – Score: 9/10

This is one of the most rich story lines you will find inside of virtual reality, and it doesn’t hurt that it comes at a price point of just $10. The story is consistent across the rooms and the theme is clearly to escape where you are placed. Out of all of the games under $30 that we have reviewed so far, this is by far the most advanced in keeping you immersed and intrigued in what us going to happen next. By the end of all of your gameplay, you won’t mind trying the levels again for a better time. This game is one you could play over and over again, trying to find new ways to escape.

Controls – Score: 8/10

There are a number of controls in this game, and developers made sure to incorporate each and every input the controller has to offer. Whether you are using the new Cosmos controllers or the Valve controllers, you are going to have plenty of opportunities to interact with the virtual world that has been placed in front of you. In a game where your survival requires you to touch and move the world around you, the developers did a fantastic job of making sure you had all of the options available to you.

Music and Sound – Score: 7/10

There is no music in this game, but it doesn’t impact your experience in the slightest. You will be preferring silence as you are trying to solve the worlds biggest mysteries and get of the rooms you are trapped in. It will be very important to listen to the person talking to you while you are in the room. They will be giving instructions on how to get out and how to use the tools around you in the best way possible.

Player Movement – Score: 7/10

This game features the typical teleporting motion that you are used to seeing in popular games. If you are familiar with Robo Recall, this game is the exact same in player motion. When you use the joystick anywhere, it shows where you will end up if you release it. Before you release the joystick, you can choose the direction you will be facing when you move there. That simple aspect of teleporting is one that is often overlooked and underused inside of VR, so it is nice to see the developers caring about what you are looking at when you reach your destination. In openworld games, a good locomotion system is imperative.

Kinetosis – Score: 7/10

If you have never played virtual reality before, this teleportation and movement system will get you a little dizzy at first. Once you are more comfortable with your new way of moving inside of your virtual world, you will be teleporting and moving just as fast as Doctor Strange. It is a fun way to get around, and it is very quick too. The latter movement on this game is strange at first, but its doesn’t toss you around either. This game is very mindful of your stomach and ensuring you can stay in this game for long periods of time.

Environment and Immersion – Score: 7/10

This game does a fantastic job at making you feel completely immersed in the world you are in. Whether it be the sounds of the people and tools or the stunning detail inside of the rooms, you are going to be invested in this game more than ever. Your immersion won’t break may times in this game, and the player movement and interactions with objects keeps your brain convinced that you are in a place that you really aren’t. This game isn’t perfect, but it as close as you are going to get for a game that is trapping you within a free world.

Overall – Score: 7.5/10

This game is only $10 in the Steam, Oculus, and Viveport Stores, and it is a part of the Viveport Infinity subscription. If you have that subscription, we highly suggest clearing up some room for this game right now. If you don’t have the service, no worries. If you choose to spend $10 on this game, you won’t be disappointed in the slightest. This game will give you your moneys worth and plus some. If you are slightly intrigued by this game, now is the time to pull the trigger.
