In our in-depth game reviews, you are going to find everything you need to know about before you go out and try or buy one of the top virtual reality games. From how you interact with your little robot friends to how accurate your guns are, we are going to have you covered. This is one of the most unique virtual reality games on the market today, and we’re excited to share it with you today.
Getting Up and Running
Cosmic Trip is only going to take up 700 MB on your computer, a file size smaller than most app updates on your phone. For $25, you might think that you are getting ripped off here. You aren’t. The game should be done downloading in a matter of seconds or minutes, just depending on your internet connection. Even if you aren’t connected to insane internet, this game will download and install very quickly.
You can find this game on the Steam store, the Oculus Store, and the Viveport store. You won’t be able to find this game for the PlayStation virtual reality headset, but that platform has enough exclusives to suffice for the time being. This game is also a part of the Viveport Infinity subscription, so you can get it there for the time being as well.
Type of Game
This is an action game that is going to give you a massive dosage of strategy. Not only are you going to be fighting the aliens with your army, but they will be constantly invading your base, forcing you to dust off your guns and show your dominance. This will keep the game interactive and fast-paced at all times.
There are three different game modes in this game, all making you keep your head on a swivel at all times. Chill, strategy, and waterfall are the three different game modes on the Cosmic Trip right now, but there is likely to be more soon, as the developers are actively working on this game. Another great feature of this game is that if you are watching on any streaming service, you can spawn items into the game and help the player. This makes the game much more inclusive than most games that put a big black box onto your forehead.
Player Perspective
Like all great virtual reality games, this game will be played from the first-person perspective. This game won’t be featuring your arms, legs, and body like most games, but it doesn’t take anything away from the immersion or even the game itself. You are going to be a lot bigger than you would be expected in this game, as the robots, aliens, and even the structures near you seem a lot smaller than you would expect.
Theme and Story – Score: 7/10
There isn’t much context in this game, as it is all mostly theme getting this game this 7 here. It would have been nice to have intro video or paper to get us acclimated to what we were doing or why, but it didn’t prove to be essential at all throughout the gameplay. There was enough action to distract us from the fact that we didn’t know our enemies as perfectly as we would usually like to.
Controls – Score: 8/10
The controls in this game were refreshingly good. Often in games like this, you are going to find the controls to be a bit too complex. That’s not what we found here. It was easy to toggle between the weapons and the strategy tactics, and the weapons in your hand were often more accurate than other games, even the ones that claim to be top of the line first-person shooters.
Music and Sound – Score: 8/10
Some games that include these types of sound effects often get a 6 or rarely a 7. What set this game apart is the uniqueness of the sound effects in this game. Each noise was original no matter where you were throughout your gameplay experience, and the replayability of this game is incredibly high, in large part of the sound effects. The soundtrack could use a facelift, but it doesn’t impact the game too much at all.
Player Movement – Score: 7/10
To reduce the feeling of motion sickness, the developers decided to make this game a standing experience, even when you have room-scale setup. The motion in this game is coming you moving from left to right, as the world in front of you won’t be moving at all. There is no teleportation, no swiveling of your head with the joystick, and no involuntary movements. The game only will move when you do.
Kinetosis – Score: 9/10
Because the game is using such a simplistic movement engine, only moving when you do, the game isn’t going to give you much motion sickness. The only reason this game isn’t walking away with a perfect 10, is because the game would slightly pause when you would move insanely quick. We only did that to test the game, as most players won’t even notice any problems in this department. You will walk out of this game feeling great, even when most virtual games don’t let you feel that way.
Environment and Immersion – Score: 8/10
There is a real reason why this game won the VR CORE Visual Design award back in 2017. The game isn’t perfect as to today’s standards, but it is incredibly impressive by any measures. If you are looking to get lost in a game, this is the one for you. The immersiveness is going to come from the always-frantic gameplay, and the environment is only going to add to it. If you are thinking you won’t last in this game, think again.
Overall – Score: 7.8/10
This game is one of the best virtual reality games we have reviewed yet, and it shows in the score. Cosmic Trip VR is going to give you a fun and strategic weekend of playing. This game is a part of the Viveport Infinity subscription, so if you are a subscriber there, you will be able to download this game right now for free. If not, it is going to set you back $25. We believe this game is well worth the money, but free is always better. Get this game while you can.
