Its been a busy week for both Steam and their users, as both gear up for the best holiday to lock yourself in your room and play video games all night. Steam has been preparing by releasing an overhauling update to the library section of their desktop application and also putting many of the popular VR titles on sale for the holiday as well. Gamers have been mentally preparing to ignore the kids at the door, ensuring that their perfect night of gaming will not be interrupted.
The update that came to the Steam library is a big one. This entire section of the app has been redesigned and reinvented. When you first open the app, it looks identical to the usual storefront that you are presented with day after day (other than the spooky discounts of course). From there, when you go to your library of games, you will see a new design. On the left-hand side of the screen you will see a list of all of the games you own. Even if you haven’t downloaded a game or you uninstalled it, the game will be showing up on your left.
When you click on the game, you will have a whole new look. This is putting an emphasis on objects, achievements, and community sharing. You will have the ability to share game clips, say something to the general community, the specific game’s community, put something on a thread to your friends, request help, and even support the developer of the game.
This update wasn’t expected by many, but it will be appreciated by thousands going forward. Updates that increase the activity of the community are always appreciated, and it will likely ultimately improve Steam’s bottom line by getting more people involved in desktop and VR gaming than ever before.
