Getting started in To the Top is as easy any other virtual title. You won’t need sticky gloves to get going in this game, as that is provided inside of the game for you. You don’t need to do anything special to be able to run all over the surface of your new world. You will need to clear up about 5 GB of space on your PC to play this game and install it. The speeds will vary depending on your internet speed but expect this game to be downloaded before an hour is completed.
The price of this game is $19.99, and it can be found on all major VR retail platforms for all major VR headsets. This game is available on the Steam Store, the Viveport Store, the Oculus Store, and even made and optimized for the PlayStation VR headset. If you are looking for a free copy of this game, all you need to do is be a part of the Viveport Infinity subscription. This game will continue to be in that section for the foreseeable future.
Type of Game
This is a VR platforming game with no limits or boundaries. In this VR title, you will have the freedom to move across various platforms with super-human abilities. Although you aren’t necessarily a human in this game, you are going to think you are. The goal is complete the levels in the fastest time possible, regardless of the route you take.
There aren’t different ways to race, but you can race alone or with different players from the online community. This game isn’t a cross-platform multiplayer game, but there are enough people to play on each platform. There is a plethora of ways to get from point A to point B in this game, and all of them are fun and original to this game and to virtual reality.
Player Perspective
You’ll be playing this game from the first-person perspective, but you won’t be getting the full view of the cat-human mutation that you are. You’ll see you hands, which stick you to the world around you, but you won’t see much else. You won’t see your arms, legs, body, or even your shadows while platform jumping. You can upgrade characters in this game, but it really only changes your hand color, which often feels useless.
Theme and Story – Score: 7/10
The theme of this game is base jumping in the future, and it holds its own weight in this game pretty well. The story on the other hand, doesn’t do any favors for the theme when it comes to the scoring. The story is nearly empty, and only thing you can do is level up and change your characters skins. Because you can’t see this during the actual gameplay, you will realize that this part of the game feels very incomplete and not finished.
Controls – Score: 7/10
The controls in this game were very minimal, but they did stay consistent the entire game. If you are a big fan of games that don’t change controls regardless of the environment, then this game is going to appeal to you. If you are one that wants many different ways to interact with your virtual environment, then you might have to search a bit longer for your perfect VR game. The controls get the job done, but they aren’t going to blow any VR player out of the water, regardless of experience.
Music and Sound – Score: 6/10
There was exclusive music made for this game, but it didn’t capture our attention and wasn’t used in the right context. Although this is somewhat of an opinion, the devs could’ve been a bit more selective on how to use the music. We know that they went a different route with including music in this game, but we don’t think it was very wise. Reinventing the wheel wasn’t needed here, but it seems like that they tried to do didn’t get the job done.
Player Movement – Score: 8/10
We didn’t love the way we moved in this game, but we did understand that it was done well. To move, you simply throw your off-hand that isn’t being held onto the blue and throw it at another part of the level that you can latch onto. If you are wanting to move quickly, this game will let you. If you want to move slowly, this game won’t stop you either.
Kinetosis – Score: 2/10
The only reason this game isn’t getting a 1/10 is the slight chance that you don’t get motion sick while in VR. If you have ever played any VR game and got slightly motion sick, the same will be happening with this game, just with bigger proportions. Keep the garage can close to you to throw your lunch into if you are playing this game for longe than a few levels.
Environment and Immersion – Score: 7/10
We loved the idea that the devs tried to capture in this game, but they came up slightly short. If you are looking for a game that is going to throw you into a different world with various elements, this isn’t the game for you. If you are looking for a game that will change colors every so often and let you focus on the gameplay more than the world around you, this game is going to appear to you very well.
Overall – Score: 6.2/10
This score captures how we felt about this game. The devs clearly put some time into this game, but they didn’t deliver a game that is going to have people flocking back to it for months at a time. For you to want to buy this game, you’ll need a stomach capable of going through a lot without any bad feedback. To try this game, we suggesting trying for free out of the Viveport Infinity subscription, even though we don’t think this game will stay in your local library for too long.
