Oculus Go Sees Permanent Price Cut, Now Down to $149

0

Facebook has officially announced that the temporary price drop for the Oculus Go will stay permanent. This will bring the price of the media-focused headset down from $199 to $149, a cost that is much more justifiable given the headsets capabilities. This doesn’t come as a surprise, as the sales are dipping while the Oculus Quest is still temporary sold out across all major retailers.

Facebook is said that “Oculus Go is now priced at $149 USD, which is equal to a $50 price drop. We are applying comparable discounts across all countries where Go is sold. Updated pricing is rolling out to all channels.”

The Oculus Go is a low-cost standalone VR headset. It was one of the first standalone headsets on the market, and has held its own despite the great technology around it. The tracking of this headset isn’t meant for gaming, and the power inside of the headset reflects that. The headset is working with 3DoF tracking (three degrees of freedom) which is perfect for simple games and lots of Tv watching. Beat Saber, Pistol Whip, and others like those titles will never see the light of day on the Oculus Go.

With that being said, this headset isn’t the best fit for most aspiring VR lovers. There are no games on this headset that are going to immerse you for months on end. The resolution is much lower than the typical VR headset, and there is only one controller that comes with the headset. The price cut makes the Go significantly cheaper than the Quest now, but it is important to resist the temptation to go for the Go. Unless you never want to play a VR game, the Go isn’t for you. If you only want to consume 360° video or watch Netflix in a cabin, then the Go might be for you.

The Oculus Quest can do everything the Go can do, and much much more. The Oculus Quest isn’t only the best standalone VR headset on the market, but it is now capable of playing high-end PC VR titles via Oculus Link. If you are in the market for a low-cost VR standalone headset, completely bypass the idea of the Oculus Go.

Facebook is also limiting the capabilities of the Go each and every month. Shared content and shared rooms are now disabled. Facebook Horizons is not going to be on the Go too, which means we can officially declare that the Oculus Go has fallen out of the Facebook product line that will continue to get updates.

With the Oculus Quest still being the best headset on the market and the Go getting its price cut, you can expect the Quest to be pushed from Oculus more than ever. Again, we can’t say this enough. If you want a VR headset without the cost of the PC, get the Quest, not the Go.
