The lasting impact of the Coronavirus is evident, as virtual and augmented reality are getting hit once more. The Mobile World Congress is annually held in Spain, but is taking the year off in attempts to stop the spreading of the deadly Coronavirus. The new name for the virus is now COVID-19, something we will refer to as for now on.
The Mobile World Congress was planned to run through the 24th to the 27th of February, but the steady stream of companies pulling out put a stop to the supposed plans. The event officially stopped itself before it could host an event that no one would be at. The organizers released a statement about the cancellation and you can check that out below.
“With due regard to the safe and healthy environment in Barcelona and the host country today, the GSMA has cancelled MWC Barcelona 2020 because the global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak, travel concern and other circumstances, make it impossible for the GSMA to hold the event,” reads a statement by the organizers. “Our sympathies at this time are with those affected in China, and all around the world.”
This was an event that many VR and AR enthusiasts were looking forward to. This wasn’t a massive Oculus Connect event, but it is an event that we can usually count on a few exciting announcements to be made. The next VR-related event we can look forward to is the Game Developers Conference in March. The event runs from the 16th through the 20th and will be focused on furthering and announcing advancements in the gaming world.
At this dev event, you can expect big names like Oculus, Valve, Sony, Epic Games, and even Unity to make an appearance and give us VR lovers something to chew on. This will be another chance for us to get out hands on the Sony exclusive Iron Man VR that is coming out on May 15th. We will keep the updates flooding in as they are available to us.
