Two years ago at the Oculus Connect 4 event, Oculus and Respawn sparked an interest in every virtual reality gamer out there. Respawn said that they were working on a AAA virtual reality game that would be an Oculus exclusive. Respawn Entertainment has produced Titanfall, Apex Legends, and is the studio behind upcoming hit Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Since the fourth connect event, Respawn has worked tirelessly on making a virtual reality experience worth staying in, something few companies have the ability to do.
Yesterday, we finally got our first look at the game that Respawn has been working on, and Oculus has had their fair share of helping when needed as well. Below you can check out the trailer that thousands saw first hand at the Oculus Connect event from yesterday.
Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond immerses you into the historic battlegrounds of World War II and gives you the AAA virtual experience that many have been on the edge of their seats waiting for. In this game, you are in the shoes of an allied agent of the Office of Strategic Services (otherwise known as the OSS), and your mission is to outgun, outsmart, and infiltrate the Nazi war machines. You will be touring all across Europe in this game, so you will have your fair share of run-ins with the French Resistance, and German Resistance to help sabotage the Nazi operations and plans from within enemy lines.
This game offers a unique twist that most video games don’t have. Along with the campaign and multiplayer modes, you will be sitting down (in a virtual world of course) with WWII vets and learn about the experiences they had in the real war. This is not only a game that will immerse you in their stories, but will also leave you thinking about the realities of war even after the headset is off.
“From the beginning, Medal of Honor has taught gamers about the tremendous sacrifice and heroic efforts made by earlier generations to safeguard our freedom,” says Peter Hirschmann, writer of the original Medal of Honor who’s returned to direct this new addition to the franchise. “Thanks to VR, we can actually put a player in the boots of a WWII soldier with Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond—the immersion that the Rift Platform provides lets us tell that story in a really meaningful way, sharing the full impact of the sacrifices and camaraderie of our shared history. Interviewing veterans of WWII was an immense privilege and allowed us to ensure its respect and faithfulness to those who served. They’re helping us drive home the full emotional and historical weight of this subject matter with players in a way that really resonates.”
All of this is driving the game to be a historically correct representation of what the war was and how it has the way we look at history in our country today. The game entertains as much as it informs, and this will make you think twice about what our ancestors were fighting for the last few hundred years. Virtual reality is the prime place to put a game like this, as it will seem like there is no escaping as you are learning and immersing inside of this virtual representation of the historically correct battle-grounds.
Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond is going to launch in early 2020 on the Rift platform, and with the assistance of Oculus Link, this game is going to be playable on the Oculus Quest. For more VR games and news, make sure to check back at VRGear.com.
