Google Glass 2 Available for Devs via Third-Party Vendors

The Google Glass Enterprise Edition was released from Google back in May of 2019, but it was only available for partner companies. Now with the latest update from the company, the Google Glass 2 will be available for developers to purchase directly from third-party retailers.

This latest edition of the headset is a refined product, especially when you compare it to what we saw when it first released back in 2013. The first time we saw Google Glass, it looked and ran very poorly. It was quickly shut down for consumers and early adopting users. When Glass reopened itself in 2017, it was purely for enterprises and business that were in the day-to-day works with logistics, field services, and many different manufacturing responsibilities.

The second edition, the edition that is less than a year old, has done well enough with partner companies to open it up to develops. If you have something near $1,000 and are wanting to buy this headset as a developer, you can do it now.

If you take a look at the Google Blog post that broke this news, you can see the bold statement they made by saying there is a “strong demand from developers and businesses” to get this AR hardware.

As for the software available on this business-focused headset, it will be running on Android. It’s “easy for developers to work with, and for businesses to integrate the services and APIs (application programming interfaces) they already use.” Google is also allowing for open source applications to be downloaded and code sample within the code of the headset.

All of these helpful tools from Google will be very helpful for developers that are just getting in the Glass and the AR world. It isn’t the most popular wearable, but Google is finally getting attention from Glass in a good way. This won’t be a Hololens competitor, but the AR glasses will give business something to use if they don’t have the Microsoft hookup.

This is not a consumer AR headset. If you are looking for a headset to improve your tech life and look stylish as you roam around the mall, this is not the one for you. If that is what you are looking for, you could check out Nreal, Magic Leap, and even the Vuzix glasses. For more AR and VR news and community updates, make sure to check back at VRGear.com
