Facebook is releasing a software update this week that should improve controller tracking on the Quest. Included in this update will be the Venues app, one of the apps Facebook uses to bring people together through virtual reality.
This update comes after there has been plenty of complaints on the lack of tracking in high tracking moments. If you have an Oculus Quest you have probably noticed that this is a serious problem the needed addressing. Whenever you would need the controllers in moments of a lot of movement, they would seem to give out more than usual. Facebook is releasing a whole new algorithm to fix the problem that many have been experiencing.
A new feature in this update is the Quests ability to recognize old guardians in multiple areas. If have set up multiple guardians in different areas, you are going to be able to use them again without having to recreate the guardians. Facebook says that this new update will give you the ability to use, create, and recognize “multiple plays paces in different rooms” and “multiple Guardian setups in the same room.” This is a new piece of software that is sure to make the setup of the standalone headset even easier than it has been. It is an amazing adjustment that we didn’t even know we needed until it was released.
It is going to take “a few days to role out” but once your headset is connected to wifi, the update will happen automatically. The owners will not have to take any action to unlock the powers of their new software.
If you play Beat Saber on expert or expert plus, you know that the tracking on the Quest often has been giving out. We hope that this update will fix it, because nothing else has. We have tried cooling the headset down between songs, resetting the headset multiple times, disconnecting it from wifi while playing, changing the color of the surroundings, and much more. The list can go on about what didn’t fix the controller tracking, and we hope this software update isn’t added to the list. If the tracking is completely fixed with this new algorithm, it could be a great step forward for Facebooks standalone headset.
Oculus Venues has made it rounds for events on Oculus Go and Gear VR in the past, but it never stuck on the headset. Facebook will be adding this app to your headset with the update for a special upcoming event. Social co-watching in virtual reality has become a big deal in the recent months, and Oculus knows that. With this service, NextVR will be providing free viewing for the Liverpool vs Sporting Clube de Portugal at Yankee stadium. This event will take place on July 24th.
Although Oculus is taking another swing at Venues on their new headset, adoption of this app isn’t promised. They are hesitant to bring to the Rift S, and they have never brought the social app to the Rift itself. It is a gamble to even bring it the Quest, but the high usage of this headset is something that Oculus is hoping to help make this app relevant once more.
With this update rolling out by the end of the week, we are excited to see how well the controller tracking improves. With a whole new algorithm, we are hoping that the headset can track the controllers at a faster rate than it already does, which is unlikely, but we are sure hopeful.
