The Virtual Athletics League, also known as VAL, is working with Cloudhead Games to bring a Pistol Whip tournament to all VR users! This is a tournament that will take place both online and in the real world, something you don’t often see from tournaments for virtual reality. There is $10,000 that will be given away in total prizes too, so make sure to read for the details and start practicing today!
The online Home Tournament will take place from March 13-14 as will be open to anyone who would like to qualify. The next stage is the Arcade Tournament which will be taking place at VR arcades all across the world. Lastly, there will be a final round in the gorgeous city of Salt Lake, Utah. The VAL headquarters are based in Utah, and that where the final rounds will played all on the 29th of March.

The competition itself is easy to understand. If you qualify for the arcade round, you’ll be taking your best combined score between two different levels. The two levels you’ll be competing with are Black Magic and Download the Future. Get your arms moving! You can start practicing today! The levels will all be played on the hardest difficulty and with the ‘no-fail’ modifier enabled. This will allow each player that qualifies, regardless of skill, will be able to finish the level.
To qualify for the Salt Lake City round, you’ll need to be top 3 in the world. That will be determined by combining your two at-home scores as well as your arcade scores. Whoever has the top 3 scores will be invited to Salt Lake for a trip with all expenses paid for. The finals will also be streamed to both Twitch and Facebook Gaming, the two biggest streaming services in the world for eSports. LIV will also be working to get this stream going, providing a third-person view of the game for all VR users that are wanting to watch the streams.

This is a big step for Oculus too, as the gaming itself will be done on their headsets. In a statement from VAL, they say that it is a “significant” event for the two companies.
“This tournament is significant since it is the first time the Virtual Athletics League has worked closely with Oculus. This tournament is also significant because this is the first large scale effort to bridge the home and arcade scene. Going forward, VAL is planning on running many more home and online and LAN events, and not just arcades. This is important because with the Quest coming out and more PCVR users than ever – there is an emerging stable user base for VR esports.”
