At the start of the year, Steam released their monthly hardware report. It wasn’t a full report, and it had some holes that needed to be adjusted. We did not report on it, as we new an adjustment would be coming. That adjustment finally came, and we are excited to share some of the results with you guys today. 

In the original report from Steam, it showed that all headsets decreased. We knew this couldn’t be correct, as the holidays is a good time for VR and that the Valve Index was coming off an impressive November sales number. Along with that problem in the report, it showed an enormous amount of Chinese users getting Steam games for the first time. There were some holes, and they have been covered up. 

Improvements

The Oculus Rift S saw the biggest jump, as it went from 0.06% all the way up to 0.21%. To put that into real numbers, that means 1 out of every 5 Steam users own and use the Oculus Rift S. This is likely a reaction to the Black Friday sale that brought the headset all the way down to $349, the cheapest we have seen it yet. 

It also helps that the headset saw exclusives like Asgard’s Wrath and Stormland. Although they are only on the Oculus Rift Platform in the Oculus Rift Store, they still brought their headsets to Steam. 

It is a possibility that Steam is also recording Quest headsets using the Link technology as an Oculus Rift S. The hardware survey does not include any Quest headsets, as they are recorded as a Rift S. With that being said, there are reports of the Quest not being detectable when taking the survey. 

Despite having a November to remember, the Valve headset saw a modest 0.02% increase during the month of December. The price may scare people away at $1,000, but it is by far the best consumer VR headset. Incredible audio and optics give this headset a feel that any VR lover needs to try. 

Windows Mixed Reality headsets are falling rapidly. The overall usage rate is a solid 0.09% right now. This is much further than it was a year ago, and has yet to see a positive month in a long time. These headsets are find when looking to buy, and even harder to find users that are still rocking with them. 

The Vive Cosmos finally has gotten some consumer love. Although it is still below the dev kit headset from Oculus made in 2014, the Cosmos is on the charts. The small growth is in large thanks to the Black Friday sale that dropped $100 off the price of the unit price. 

VR is still at an all time high in users. There was a 3 month dip, but we have hit the numbers that we all saw back in September. This is going to continue to trend up as more and more games are released. For more VR news and exciting community updates, make sure to check back at VRGear.com
